Grand Challenge
Students will work in groups to design a solution to an Engineering Grand Challenge throughout the school year. Our class will focus on the challenge of Improving Health Informatics. This Grand Challenge will carry through all content areas and application classes, and students are expected to use information gained in each class as part of their final presentation.
1st Semester: Researching focus areas for health informatics, current events research on new and pertinent data and breakthroughs in the areas of health informatics
2nd Semester: Investigating prevalent diseases, designing/developing a new plan of action in one of the focus areas for health informatics
Science and Engineering Fair
Science fair will be a focus in research for the first and second marking periods. Students will work on the proposal and paper for their experiments and the research while in class, but the actual experiment will be completed outside of school hours. More detailed information will be coming home soon. The final project and paper will be due in early December.
Research Notebook
Students are responsible for keeping a research lab notebook. In it they will have daily classwork, notes, lab procedures, experiments they work through, vocabulary, and other important information for the class. Since we will not be working from a textbook the work done in the notebook is an important component of the class. The notebooks will stay at school, but students are allowed to take them home to study or complete assignments if needed. Students are expected to keep their notebook up-to-date as they are an integral component of class.
Electronic Devices
IPads have been provided to the students for school use. The iPads should be charged at home and brought to school on a daily basis. They are used in our class for research, lab practices and recordings, Google Classroom, and other apps throughout the year. Students without iPads during a class that requires their use are still required to complete the assignments for credit.
Google Classroom
Students will use Google Classroom on a regular basis to do assignments electronically. It is very important that students check their Google Classroom account on a daily basis and complete assignments in a timely manner. These assignments are part of their grade and will facilitate the learning of new material. It is also important for students to review the graded assignments as they are returned in case changes need to be made or assignments need corrections.
Grading Policy
Final grades will be determined using the following percentages (per Board policy):
Classwork/homework (practice labs, notebook assignments, in-class research, etc.) 40%
Assessments (tests, quizzes, projects, and labs) 60%
Late Work Policy
Late is defined as any work turned in after the designated due date. If a student does not turn in an assignment a grade of a zero will be entered into the gradebook. The student will have 3 days after the zero is entered into the gradebook to make up the assignment. Only one assignment can be made up during the quarter for a maximum possible grade of 80%.
If a student is absent (sick, field trip, etc.) it is his/her responsibility to ask the teacher for work that was missed. The student will have five days to make up the assignment(s) without penalty. After these five days have passed the work is considered late/missing.
Re-do Policy
Re-do opportunities are only given for assessments. It is the student's responsibility to request and advocate for an opportunity to re-do an assessment. Students will need to attend a re-teach session (lunch & learn, tutorial, etc.) prior to the assessment re-do opportunity. A maximum re-do score is 80% .
Cheating or Plagiarism
These are serious academic offenses that will not be tolerated in our classrooms. If a student is caught cheating, a ticket will be issued and a grade of zero will be given without an opportunity for make-ups or redos. This includes copying and pasting any written text and submitting as original work.
Progress Reports
Students will receive progress reports and report cards throughout the year. We send them out every two weeks to help students keep track of their progress throughout the marking period. Please review the progress reports with your child when you receive them, and then sign and return the attached cover sheet.
Please contact us if you have any questions or would like further clarification. We look forward to an exciting and productive year.
